From the Damage Prevention
S Board
ince its inception in 2019, the WVDPB has been virtually an unknown entity in the state. Not a lot
of members or homeowners knew who, or what the Damage Prevention Board was or what we did. Since
taking over the day-to-day activities of the Board a little over a year ago this month there has been a significant increase in first the awareness of the function of the board as well as an increase in the number of violations filed. That is in large part because of the efforts of the WV 811 Executive Director and me getting out there where the rubber meets the road and informing our members and homeowners that they now have someone else on their side to uphold the dig law in the state. It also sends a message to anybody doing any kind of digging that if you break the law, there will be consequences.
We are on track this year to more than double the number of violations filed last year. Last year the WVDPB had 86 violations total for the year. As of this date we are already at 70. We look to do even more going into 2025, with more education, more opportunities to educate the public and let them know that here in West Virginia we care about the members working near our infrastructure and want to keep them and the residents of West Virginia safe, and if you do not follow the rules there will be consequences.
